We use Wonders for our language arts and writing. this is a whole group instruction. I also use the Daily 5 model for the students to be able to work independently at their instructional level. Given an opportunity for me to work with students in small group settings. The important part of the Daily 5 is that students have a choice on what they would like to work on, and choose the best materials to accomplish the task, using paper or pencil or technology.
Daily 5 CHOICES
- Read to Self: Students read independently at their instructional level with a books that they have, or has been assign to, and work on a reading goal.
- Word Work: Using our weekly spelling lists, the students log into Wonders site and work on the assigned word list and modules. They also have a practice of their spelling words with paper and pencil as well in the Wonders's module.
- Work on Writing: Once again the students will build their writing stamina to at least 20 minutes, so they will be able to write independently about whatever they would like. If they get stuck and need an idea, we have sticks to help them come up with ideas.
- Read to Someone: This is usually the students' favorite choice. The students will build their stamina for 20 minutes as they read with a peer. As they read, they are responsible for asking each other questions to check for understanding.
- Listen to Reading: Student use RAZ-KIDS to listen to books, or read a book and record their reading. This provides fluency and helps students who are inexperienced readers, or struggling to read. Listening to Audio books also helps high readers with comprehension as they exceed in their reading levels.
